Concept Design

Concept art helps to convey the look, feel and mood of a design idea. It is used to capture and share the overall design vision before anything goes into production, versus trying to express everything in specific terms.

SMART 1: vlog idea

using time until next week, research Alton Towers and research until the 2nd week of May. Use Wikipedia to research Alton Towers.

SMART 2: animation (back up)

Using time today in a lesson, learn how to animate using custom paths and do the custom path animation by the end of the lesson.

Possible storyboard for the animation:

It will be a 2d animation as animating 3d is difficult. First, I will show a drawing of the roller coaster and its name; then, I will show various statistics of each ride, like how many inversions it has, how high the drop is, and the angle the drop is. These statistics will be animated, and animations reused for the other coaster’s statistics. I will then give a brief description of the ride and share other people’s opinions.

Many roller coasters made by RMC are insanely popular and are considered the best in the world.

Design justifications:

I decided to make a short animation to introduce my vlog and also show some animation skills. I thought this would be more interesting for my audience when they watch it on youtube.

I decided to have two boys walk into a room to watch TV when a bumper for a programme at Alton Towers appears. I think this will be an excellent introduction to my vlog.

There are posters of roller coaster promotional material in the room and a picture of Millenium Force at Cedar Point on the walls. This shows that the people in the animation like roller coasters. This fits into the target audience for my product as the people who will be viewing my vlog are also into roller coasters and theme parks, so they will be interested in watching the vlog. Everything else in the room is either a reference to something or something from a particular game I’ve played or something that I created myself.

Both the characters in the animation are both very simplistically designed and have circles for hands and legs, and are a copy-paste of each other. They are both boys as I can voice them easily. I have a low voice, so saying a character that has a higher pitch voice would be difficult. Also, they are both males because a high percentage of coaster enthusiasts are male. One of the characters is the person that appeared in the pencil case animation I made, and his friend is a recolour of him. They are drawn like they are because I can quickly animate them with the puppet pin tool.

The colours that I used are bright and vibrant so that they are eye-catching and draw your attention. My target audience and Vice media target audience are young adults, so the colours should appeal to them.

Media Language:

In the vlog:

mise en scene: The location was in Alton Towers theme park; I chose this theme park because it is my home park. And it has plenty of intense roller coasters, which is what my vlog will be about. The facial expressions in the vlog speak for themselves, pure excitement and happiness on my part. My body language shows that I am relaxed and I am ready to go on the next ride.

Camera: the camera angles appear to be over the shoulder in some places and eye level with medium shots so you can easily see me and will be able to listen to me.

Editing: The pacing is usual, and it isn’t sped up or slowed down. It could be said that it would have a slow pace as some scenes could go on longer than others.

Sound: the sound is diegetic as there is no other music that plays throughout the vlog. It all takes place within the park, and I can hear all the sounds in each recording.

Lighting: the lighting appears natural as the video takes place outdoors, and there aren’t any lighting effects.

Genre:

The genre is both the same on the animation and the vlog. The park centres around roller coasters and has different themed areas such as X-Sector, Forbidden Valley, Dark Forest, Mutiny Bay, and CBeebies land.

Representation:

I tried my best at representing the park to its best advantage concentrating on positive facts and information. When I was filming, there were people of different cultures and backgrounds in my vlog representing equality at the park.

Economics:

Since we filmed the vlog during the COVID outbreak, the park wasn’t as busy as it should be; there were restrictions with mandatory masks on all rides. This made the ride not as enjoyable as it would have been in normal circumstances as you were not supposed to scream on the rides. There were spaces on the rides, so no interaction with fellow riders. Because of this, I was unable to accurately represent the park or coasters to my audience in my vlog.

The vlog plans

If I were going to Alton Towers, I would do a small introduction at the park entrance, and I will tour around the park and film each of the major attractions and hopefully ride them too. I will film a brief explanation of each ride and how much I enjoyed it.

On returning home, I will edit the footage and add subtitles, add more information, and trim some of the footage that goes on for too long. I will piece it together and add the animation at the beginning.

If I didn’t go to Alton Towers, I would have an animated section about the rides.

  1. Great work Alex – could you add some more design justification detail on why you chose specific colours/designs for your animation and how they fit your target audience?
