Legal and Ethical Considerations – Pre-Production
After doing research on the legal and ethical aspects within media, I will now be linking them to my work and thinking about how suitable my concept is in this sense. In my opinion, my show is almost completely ethical. “Almost” because there are aspects that could technically be deemed as unethical, even though I believe that nobody would consider them so. Since my show, Age of Umbra, is quite dark and made for an older audience, it deals with heavier themes and is not supposed to be a light-hearted fantasy. It is dark and high fantasy, meaning there is a […]
My Storyboard & Animatic
Following on from my research on storyboards & animatics, I tried them out and created them for my title sequence, keeping in mind my analysis of the examples. I already had some sort of idea for what I wanted the title sequence to be, but it really helped to lay it out, see it on paper and then make an animatic. Having that chance to add movement and some animation showed me what didn’t work and what I wanted to change or add. There is a lot that could be improved, but sadly, I don’t really have the […]
Concept
My show is called “Age of Umbra”. The word umbra means shadow or darkness because that is the time period in which the main story is set. But to understand this a little better, let’s delve into the history of my fantasy world and some factual information. Extra Info/Facts The different species (originated from the six kinships) and their lands: Elves: Tillursir Humans: Gilgoreth, Smalbruk Orcs: Fal-Opar, Fal-Endith Fae: Nebedemer Dwarves: Gilhiltos, Taramak, Kirinorth Nereids: Lusializ, Lizzima, Zimaliz, Zimalel Tillursir, Gilgoreth, Nebedemer and the nereid seas are all kingdoms. Smalbruk is a part of Gilgoreth but is […]
Race, Culture & Folkart
Race and Culture Race (in the media) – the representation of different people with varying ethnic background, including aspects such as appearance and speech, through the use of characters. Culture (in media) – the inclusion of the characteristics and knowledge of a particular group of people, encompassing language, religion, cuisine, social habits, music and arts. When creating characters, and content, it is important to consider these things, because they are very real and large parts of life. Different racial groups and cultures exist worldwide, and they are what bring colour, vibrancy and exuberance to humanity. People’s differences in appearance, […]

Age and Disability
In the media, different ages and disabilities are often presented, but it is often in a negative light. Certain age groups have trouble understanding others and lean on the negative aspects portrayed by a fraction of the population in that age range. At times, a hidden cause may be the reason behind certain behaviours, but the truth is too often ignored or overlooked, and an entire group of people end up suffering because of this. There are also some problems with age representation in fantasy. Here are some examples and their positive and negative connotations. Wizards, […]
Target Audience
A key part of the fantasy brief is understanding the target audience. So, we had a lesson on this topic and I’ll be covering the notes I took in this blog, as well as any extra research I did outside of the lesson. First, it is important to know what demographics are, since they fit into the apprehension of the target audience. The definition of demographics is the statistical data of a population, especially those showing average age, income, education etc. I found it pretty simple to understand what demographics are, as in my head, they are different ways of […]
Gender Representation in Character Design
An important part of character design is gender representation. Gender can generally be defined as: “The behavioural, cultural, or psychological traits typically associated with one sex” To understand how gender is positively or negatively represented, you have to look into different characters and their presentation in the media. The first example I did a quick investigation on was the film Moana. I chose another film to study, but this was actually a difficult decision. I want to show both good and bad examples of gender representation, but also of both genders. I found that most articles and websites talk […]
Concept Development
A big part of the fantasy brief that we were given, involves concept development, and this isn’t surprising, as it is one of the most essential and critical stages of new product development steps. Once an idea is generated (and usually in the working world, screened for quality), the concept development stage is what follows next – carried out by keeping in mind the needs of the customers as well as the nature of the product. For our fantasy brief, character design is something that is required, so we began with doing some concept art for a character. Everyone experiences […]
