Last year, I learned about MIGRAINE, which is an acronym for things to include in your writing when analysing a piece of media. It was useful to follow when doing my analysis on Midnight in Paris which involved a lot of in-depth research, because having some sort of structure helped me feel less lost, as I was able to break everything down into small sections to complete, making the task less gargantuan.
We went over what genre meant, and the meaning of conventions. Genre is a method of categorisation, which we use to identify a style of art, music or literature using socially agreed-upon conventions over time. Conventions are norms or standards and are necessary to recognize a genre. This is done through the various types of conventions that exist and are commonly used in media: props, themes, settings and characters, to name a few. Using this knowledge, we were asked to work together in groups and analyse the genre of a particular film. Our group chose the first Shrek film, which has become a classic in animated movies and is a perfect example of a film that fits into the fantasy genre. Here is our slide:
