Industry Wages

I shall just be posting my notes from this lesson, as a record of what we went over.

The British Values:

  • Democracy
  • Rule of Law
  • Individual Liberty
  • Respect & Tolerance for those with different faiths and beliefs.

They were introduced by the government in 2011 and have further shaped our society to be more fair and humane.

Wages:

  • Employed – Employed people are paid according to their hours of work and the complexity and/or position of their role. Generally, they are paid monthly unless the contract specifically states otherwise, and payments are made via bank transfer, along with a payslip which is given as a record.
  • Freelance – A freelancer is responsible for setting and negotiating their own rates of pay. They bill their clients by creating and sending invoices and are also responsible for submitting a self-assessment tax form to calculate their income tax and national insurance contributions.

Rates of Pay:

  • Yearly Salary – The amount of money paid in a year, which is the most normal rate for employment.
  • Day Rate – Work charged per day
  • Hourly Rate – Work charged per hour
  • Fixed Fee – The total amount paid for a job (usually within a fixed time period)

Industry Rates:

According to BECTU (explain what that is) and assuming you work the standard 8-hour shift (9-5) 5 days a week, here are the recommended wages:

Weekly wage for an animator – £805 (£20 an hour)
Weekly wage for a 3D generalist – £575 (£14 an hour)
Recommended charge for junior animators (starting wage) – £12.50 an hour

What I took away from the lesson

It’s a good idea to track everything in the future, in terms of profession. Things like logging income and outcome, creating budgets for yourself and organising your allowances for different aspects will make life much easier.
