Adobe After Effects: Compositing and Video Manipulation

Colour Keying:

It is the act of selecting a specific colour value in a shot and then making any pixels with that value (or similar values) transparent.

When filming/ photographing content with a keying screen, lighting is the most important factor.

Lighting the Subject

You need to make sure that the person/ object is lit well so that you can see it, you need to contrast to key effectively.

Lighting the Screen

Once the subject is lit how you want, use separate lights focussed on just the green screen, to remove all shadows and make it as consistent colour as possible.

If the screen isn’t clean enough, or there isn’t enough contrast the green screen effect won’t be as effective.

Colour Correction:

The act of improving the look of a photograph by adjusting the levels of particular colours within it.

Colour Compositing

Once you have your footage & it is imported into your software, you can then start to apply effects onto your layers to composite your images together.

Keying and Masking

These are techniques used to remove parts of imagery:

  • Keying tools remove colours (Keylight Effect)
  • Masks remove user-defined areas(Pen / Shape Tools)

Colour Correction

Once you have your final clips & effects, you then have to start altering the colours of your layers so that they match & look like they belong together naturally.
