For the redesign of the racing suits, I did research around different patterns, colours and features on the suit. For the colours I was still torn between using the gulf livery colours and the original McLaren colours red and white so to fix this frustration I did some research into past McLaren suits that have been used from 1970 to now.
For the racing suits my idea was to take an element for each suit there has been and make one complete suit out of all of those elements, I got a template off of the internet for this that I could work on and brought this into illustrator. I used the pen tool to make the blocks of colour in each part of the suit, by doing this I actually improved my skills with the pen tool because of the tight areas I was working with with the template and this meant I had to be more precise with the pen tool. As I was incorporating each part from the suits into mine I was trying to be very wary that colours wouldn’t clash and make the suit look tacky and disorganised. I decided to use the black spread across the chest as it was a theme in the suits that existed for 5 years, I also liked it as it kept the chest area simple and not too overcrowded as well as providing an area for me to put my sponsors. I added an element of the 1970s suit to the sleeves with a red strip using the same colour as the original by using the ink dropper tool. I used elements from the most up-to-date suit down the sides of the legs with the blue and papaya orange, it was important to me that there were more orange highlights in the suit than any other colour apart from the grey as it keeps the McLaren brand still recognisable with the orange being what they stand out most through now. Although not shown in my mood board, I also took inspiration from the 1970s suit for the back of my suit, having it red and instead of the Malboro logo which is not allowed anymore in F1, I placed the driver’s number there instead. I decided to only use these elements and not anymore from the timeline I had created, this is because I had peer feedback that using that much may make the suit look overwhelming which I agreed with so decided to leave the suit how it was.
I decided to keep the same sponsors that the team already has as I found this would save me more time so I could spend more time on my other touchpoints as this one was already taking up a lot of my time, additionally keeping the sponsors that already exist make the suit look more realistic with familiar sponsors.
What I like about my suit is how even with the numerous colours used the whole suit comes together as one and blends instead of colours looking like they have been patched randomly across the suit. Although I didn’t use all of the suits to make this one after receiving peer feedback that it looks overwhelming, I still think it works really well in taking a snapshot of history. Following on from that I also like how I have managed to keep all parts of the suit the same no matter the angle so it doesn’t look odd.
Something I would improve on is placing this suit onto a mockup, although I did try this I found it really complicated to work with as the mockup was 3D, I could’ve fixed this by making my own mockup by using an existing image of a driver if I had more time. Time is also something else I needed to work on as I spent more time than I should’ve making these suits which made my original timeline plan go off track.
