For my ident, I used the tv company Adult Swim and 2 characters Rick and Morty that feature in a show on the channel. To begin with, I found an image online to help me begin with imagining my idea.
Original Idea
The idea I originally had for my ident was for the characters to begin with them both being against each other and moving away from each other and coming back towards each other and clash to make them merge. From this, they would separate from each other and only have half of their heads, this is where the ‘ADULT SWIM’ would come in as it would slowly be revealed whilst the characters move apart.
Bringing the Idea to Life
To begin with, I brought the original image of Rick and Morty on top of each other into photoshop so I could erase the middle and make them separate.

As well as this, I also needed to create versions of the characters cut in half so when they separate in half their faces merge together as it will be 50/50. By using the layer mask tool, I could cover half of the faces of my characters and get rid of what I didn’t want without losing information.
This is the result I had after making these adjustments, this made it easier for me to move the characters in after effects and make them independent so they fit in with my design idea.
When opening after-effects I selected new composition where I was met with a settings screen where I can choose how long to make my composition.
I set the time to 6 seconds as I believed this would be long enough to include everything I wanted but still be short enough to be viewed as an ident. From this, I imported all the images I would need into after effects and dragged them down to the ‘new composition’ tool that would place my images into the composition.
From here, I began to animate my characters, I aligned them to the middle of the composition and marked this so I would always know where the middle is throughout the process, this also helped with keeping the composition consistent and not having the characters moving all over the place and keeping them on an equal level. When beginning to move my characters, I clicked ‘P’ on the keyboard, which means position, so it would know where my character starts and by moving the time needle I can then tell after effect where I want the movement to end.
