Image Editing

What is Image Editing?

Image editing refers to modifying or improving digital or traditional photographic images using different techniques, tools or software.

When selecting images to use you must make sure they are of high quality. When Google searching, hover over an image to find its resolution. 1000×1000 will not be of good quality, it is important to use good quality images so you will be able to feather and so your image will then also fit into other images without them looking out of place.

Task- Work on how to separate images using the pen tool

Tools to use; Pen tool, Layer Masks and select and mask

To do this I began by importing my image into photoshop and drawing around it with the pen tool, once completed I would I have the marching ants around my drawn shape around the image. By right-clicking I was given a list of different actions, I clicked ‘Make Selection’ and by doing this I was met with a box that gave me the option to feather the image and click ok, I clicked ok as I could continue working on my image as I would feather it after this. Using layer masks is like using an eraser for the background however unlike using the actual eraser it is a way that is less destructive as you will not lose all the information you had.

This box is the image I started with and using the pen tool and layer masks I was able to erase it from the background and place it in a different setting.

Using this method means I can easily and quickly place my image in different images/ backgrounds and still edit if I need to.

Extra examples with me using image editing.

In today’s lesson, I have learnt how to use the layer mask tool to erase unwanted backgrounds from around my image. With the new skills learnt I can take this into future projects I do to manipulate an image by removing it from one and bringing it into another one making it look like it was always there.

I can also bring the skills I have learnt today into my magazine cover and spreads by deleting the backgrounds out of images I may want to use to have plain backgrounds or if I want to give them a new background. Where I will want to place text around my images, it will look more professional them having no background rather than making it look overly busy with loads of images having different coloured backgrounds.
