Why is editing important
Editing is the final touch on filmmaking, correcting mistakes and engaging the audience. Without it, you may not be as invested in the story, characters or events taking place. It is a great way to eliminate mistakes and take out boring unnecessary footage that is not needed.
I will do a lot of editing in my vlog so that it is not too long for my audience to watch and to keep their attention focused on what is important.
Pacing
Pacing is the rate & flow of any movements/events. By changing the length of shots/amount of cuts, you can guide the viewer’s emotional responses.
I will try and keep my animation short and to the point, I will do this by making the frames move at a normal pace and not slow as to prolong the animation and make the viewer uninterested.
Narrative
Ensuring that the story always progresses in some way. Too fast will confuse the viewer, whilst too slow can make them bored. Keep it interesting, a beginning, middle and end is a good way to plan a narrative.
My animation will tell a story, it will have an introduction, a middle where I will show my previous animations and will end by introducing my vlog about Alton Towers.
Audience
Considering audience is vital with editing, they can dictate what shot length & complexity is appropriate. Younger audiences tend to have a shorter attention span than other adults. Keep this in mind who is your target audience? Make sure what you make is suitable for that viewer age range.
I will try and keep my vlog and animation suitable for my audience by not making it too long as I want to keep my young audience interested. I don’t want them to get bored with too much information, I need to keep it to the point.
Film
These are used reels of celluloid, exposing them with light to burn final images onto them.
Normally this could only be done once, the reels were then cut and spliced together to edit one clip after another in one longer reel (often expensive and tedious to make)
+ Traditional, Less noise, Better colours – Expensive, A bit of a faff
Digital
This is a modern form of capturing footage. It allows the cameraman to take footage and to have things stored in digital files & formats. It is easy to undo mistakes & change anything we need to if we film in digital format.
This non-destructive way of working is accessible to everyone now, with websites dedicated to hosting videos and films for audiences to watch, enjoy and critique.
+ Resizable, Non-destructive, Cheaper – Less risk = Less care
I will be using a digital format to film my vlog and animation. This is mainly because I do not have access to the old fashioned film format. Also, I wouldn’t know how to use it. I have learnt how to use digital videoing. This will be a lot easier to edit etc.
My own edit:
Narrative
I made it go down from the sky all the way down into the city with the two people. It tells the story of what lies beneath the clouds in the City.
Pacing
Using pacing I sped up some clips that I thought were a bit slow to speed up the movie, this is so it did not become boring to watch and gave the viewer something new to look at sooner. This is useful as I could try and use this whilst making my vlog and animation, I could speed up some clips of Alto Towers that are a bit unnecessary and could tire the audience. I could also slow down clips that I want the audience to take note of, perhaps show something in slow motion. Like the ride, Rita, which is very fast so to see peoples faces in slow motion when the ride accelerates would be cool.
Could you expand on your points here – what did you find uselfull? Could you incorporate any of these ideas into your work?
