Concept Art and Environment

In today’s lesson, we looked at types of concept art and then we made concept art for our briefs.

Concept art is a visual representation of an idea, design or mood created by concept artists for the producer and director to look over and approve of. It should at a glance, convey the overall elements and not be focused on detail.

Good concept art makes use of Composition, Simple & Readable Forms, Interesting Tones & Textures, Contrast and Range, Thematic Colour Palette, Colour Harmony

The types of Concept art are:

Greyscale compositions – made using grey tones, black and white

Thumbnailing – small sketches

composition | Concept art, Art, Abstract artwork

Simple shape blockouts – easiest, triangle shapes

digital painting | The Attempted Game Art of ANYA THE ARTIST

photo bashing – detailed overlayed images in photoshop more realistic

I made a simple shape Blockout concept art here: I took inspiration from the image on the right.

I wanted to choose a mountainous scene, that was going to work with my brief (Fantasy). I have been watching Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit for inspiration, so, I have been thinking of using scenery in my animation similar to what was used in these fantasy films. I see an air of mystery and beauty in the above image so I think that it would work well. I could use this scene for when Zeph and his friends are adventuring through the mountains to find the entrance to the dwarf mines to locate the wealth stone.

  1. This is great Alex, I like that you used an image as reference for your environment which means you have a better judgement for colour and form! đŸ™‚
