Double exposure 2

In todays lesson, we made a double exposure video with track mattes.

Double exposure is combining two different images with two different exposures. It was originally called the ghost effect. Before, it was using the same bit of film twice which is destructive as it permanently changes it. Now we can do it digitally meaning we can do it as many times as we like and we can undo it if we don’t like it.

Alpha channels control opacity & what parts of a digital image is transparent. White = keep, grey = blended, black = remove

Track mattes are invisible layers that control the opacity of the layer directly beneath it. It must have transparency and B&W colour values to work. It can be a black and white image or footage that has been keyed. There are two forms of it in after effects: Alpha uses the transparency and Luma uses brightness values.

Make sure you consider these factors when making track matte plates:

High contrast

Considered lighting

One-colour negative space

what effects/methods I used:

I got some videos from Pixabay of an ink effect and a person thinking

I put a track matte on the videos by clicking the square and the circle icon in the bottom left corner

I made the track matte setting to luma to blend the two videos

I duplicated the ink layer using ctrl J

I added some effects like effect, channel, set matte and changed the use for matte to either saturation or alpha. Or I could change the saturation with curves to however I want.

I think this could be useful for my fantasy brief because I can make a cinematic title sequence with it. Like I could have a character’s face with a fire background. But I don’t have any plans to make a title sequence.
