Design justification of characters and their background

In today’s lesson, we looked at the design justification of our characters or backgrounds in our fantasy briefs.

I chose a hero and a villain character because, in fantasy, there is always a hero and a villain as it is a staple to stories. In The Hobbit, the necromancer and the main antagonist was Azorg the defiler. These were shown as dark and disfigured characters. This automatically made you think they were evil and the music changed to set the mood. The heroes were the dwarves and the hobbit, they were as good-humoured, singing and dancing and drinking. They looked after and supported each other.

From the influences of The Hobbit and The Lord Of The Rings, I made for my main character Zeph, his features such as appearance, sword and shield are shown in the image below. I’ve shown him looking clean, freshly shaven with a kind expression that makes him approachable. I have given him rounded edges which gives him a gentler look. He wears bright colours which reflect the people who raised him. He fights only to defend the weak and the good. He doesn’t look to fight or start wars, but he will protect himself and others from what evil may do. He will also defend the stone to prevent it from falling into the wrong hands.

edit: he also has body armour for protection, His weapons and armour were fashioned by the elves which he was raised from a baby.

I also created a villain character Bartosz, his features such as appearance, sword and shield are shown in the image below. From the influences such as The Hobbit and The Lord Of The Rings, I understood that all evil characters are portrayed as dark, dirty with some form of disfigurement. They generally look and sound angry with a short temper which makes them extremely violent. I have given his armour sharp edges to show or indicate harshness which again can give an impression of a violent nature. He wears dark colours, mostly grey and he will fight only for what he wants. He will start a war just to search for the remaining stones so he can destroy civilisation with the flame of oblivion and gain ultimate power and revenge. He is driven to never stop until he gets what he needs. He has clearly been in many battles, he has many disfigurements I have shown him with a lost eye which is covered by an eyepatch, he also walks with a limp. he is always ready and looking for a fight, death walks with him.

I also made character profiles of both characters:
