Industry Guest Speaker – Pat Imrie

who is Pat Imrie: He is a senior/lead VFX artist & teacher from Edinburgh in the United Kingdom. He has worked on many films like Fantastic Beasts, Avengers Infinity War, and Pacific Rim Uprising.

what did we cover in his talk: Pat spoke about when he first discovered animation when he was 15. He got a free software disc from a magazine. His first animation was a bouncing ball. He started as a junior artist in 2007 where he spent 6 months creating UVs. He worked with industry veterans, after 18 months he left as a general artist. Recession in 2008 and started teaching where he also freelanced. This cured his fear of public speaking. He then returned to fulltime freelance in 2011. He moved to London in 2014 where he worked on Avengers, Fantastic Beasts and Wonder Woman. He took an 8 month break from VFX in 2017 and moved back home where he started photography as a hobby and continued teaching. He also talked about mental health and how you shouldnt over exert yourself and work all the hours as it can be very stressful working for a big company in London.

what did you get out of his talk: We learnt about his career and what projects he worked on. I found it interesting finding out what films Pat has worked on and what an amazing achievement for him to have worked on blockbuster movies. I found him very inspirartional and interesting to listen to. I think animation will be quite challenging and will require alot of determination and patience.
