Aim: to use the mesh tool in illustrator.

first I  got a reference image of an apple, Then I used the pen to create the shape of the apple. I then selected the mesh tool and placed a mesh on the shape. I then selected the anchor points and selected each one with the direct selection tool. I then used the eyedropper tool as colour reference.

I made a balloon by creating one with the shape tool, I then created a mesh by going to object, then create gradient mesh. Then I selected certain points and added shading using the eyedropper. below are some examples:
