Job roles

We researched two job roles in the VFX and Animation industry to see which ones we would go with.

The VFX job I would go for is Modelling artist

Modelling artists use a computer to create 3D people, weaponry, plants, and animals.

They begin with a brief, which could be in the form of 2D or 3D graphics created by a concept artist. They can also use reference materials scanned into 3D software, such as photographs or line drawing sketches.

They start by creating a ‘wireframe,’ also known as a ‘mesh’ of the item. This appears to be a succession of overlapping lines forming the desired 3D model. They can sculpt the model of the object to closely match what is desired using the mesh. They work with digital sculpting brushes as well as a real graphics pen and tablet.

Modelling artists are involved in the CG and 3D stages of the VFX pipeline. They can then add animation, texture, and lighting to the 3D models they create.

A character artist is a modelling artist that specialises in designing a specific form of 3D models, such as characters. They will most likely produce both the models and textures for the characters in this situation.

Modelling artists work for VFX studios or as independent contractors. Smaller VFX studios or firms may not differentiate between modelling and texturing artist responsibilities, instead of advertising for a single position that does both.

Modelling artists use Maya and Blender for 3D modelling software.

The animation job I would go for is Concept artist

Concept artists come up with concepts for how the animation should appear. They start with rough sketches. Their work is then used as a starting point for animators, as well as background and character designers.

Concept artists are typically self-employed. They create artwork in response to an animation studio’s brief and collaborate with them to develop a visual style that works. They must communicate well with the client to comprehend their needs. They will frequently have to recreate their drawings numerous times before finding something that the studio likes. For a short turnaround, the first passes are sometimes quick and loose. They also add more detail and quality at times. They produce art using computer software as well as hand drawing and painting.

Concept art is the first exploration of aesthetics and ideas, and it’s frequently used in pre-production pitches to market a project, film, or series.

Concept artists are involved in the development stage of the pipeline. They can make concepts for scenes for the production so the team knows what they’re doing.

Concept artists use Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator for 2D art software.

One industry professional that is a concept artist is Shaddy Safadi, who is a video game concept artist and the co-founder of One Pixel Brush.
