MAYA Character rigs – Luxo Jr.

Luxo Jr

Luxo Jr is a CGI animated short film made by Pixar and directed by John Lasseter, which was released in 1986 where Luxo Sr, a big illuminated desk lamp, sees a yellow ball roll up to him and pushes it away. When it comes back to him, he realises that Luxo Jr, his son, wants to use it to play with him.

What made it so famous was the fact that no one had seen anything like it, there werent many 3d animations at the time and the audience seeing an inanimate object move around and push a ball around made them go crazy.

Controllers in the rig

We looked at a animation rig for a luxo lamp and looked at each controller

This one makes you move the lamp itself

This one makes you move the base of the lamp

This one makes you move the top of the lamp

This one makes you move the head of the lamp

This one makes you move the neck of the lamp

Then we animated the lamp and made it observe the box in front of it

Here is my animation:

The part where it hops around was actually completely accidental

I added more to the animation where the box moves and hits the lamp, making it back off

Here is the completed animation:
