Production formats RESUB

I will research what media production formats are best for my project mechanoids and how they will showcase/improve my skills.

Production formats:

Production formats are products that can be achieved and produced. Here are some examples and how I could make use of them for my Creative project. Production formats go hand in hand with a business line.

Animation:

Animations don’t need to be complicated or long, just long enough to tell the story or message you want to show.

I feel like this could be what I end up going with for my project as I’m good at using Adobe After Effects and 2D animation, so this could be what I’m most likely going to be doing for this project. What I could make as my animation could be a scene that would happen in Mechanoids, the title sequence, or a trailer for it.

This would work well for my target audience as animations are enjoyed mostly by younger viewers, so my age demographic would be best suited to this kind of viewing.

An example of an animation:

The animation I did for the fantasy brief last year:

Film or Documentary:

Short films are usually 2-20 minutes and short documentaries can vary in length. If I chose this format I will keep my documentary short if possible, so it doesn’t drag and be boring to watch as my target audience is young.

Like above, where it’s an animation. This could be something I could do, as I could make Mechanoids a short film if I wanted to. Maybe I could make the opening sequence and have voice acting for the characters. However, having Mechanoids as a real-life recorded film is a no-go for me.

An example of a film or documentary:

My Alton Towers vlog for the culture brief from last year:

Zine:

Zines are booklets made by someone or a group that is aimed at marketing a certain topic. They are not produced in mass as they are aimed at a small group of people, so are circulated on a small scale to spread bold, strong and revolutionary ideas. This would work well for my target audience as a way of promoting my animation, I could make leaflets to market my idea to the demographic.

I could try making a zine for Mechanoids and use it as a way of promoting it. I can use Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop so this could work as I have the skills in these software. But, I have little understanding of zines, so I will not use these.

An example of a zine:

The Mixopolis Times activity page from the November/December 2016 Lego magazine:

Stop motion:

They are made with everyday items, settings, and cut-outs of purpose-made characters, Lego or people. These take a long time to make as you have to film each slight movement, I don’t have enough time to produce a stop motion for this brief, this is because it can take up to three working weeks to produce just one minute of animation. To make the sets and figures, characters will also take more time on top of the three weeks.

A stop motion would work very well for my idea and target audience.

I could try using stop motion for my project and animate it using this as I might want to try something new. But I don’t think I have the resources to make one and it takes way too much time to even make a stop motion, meaning that I would probably have to begin production extremely early, so I probably won’t use stop motion for Mechanoids due to time constraints.

An example of a stop-motion:

Music video:

Music videos are filmed in person, or done as a lyric video using after effects such as text and motion graphics.

I could try making a music video to try something new. I could use my animation skills with Adobe After Effects and my drawing skills in Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop. But I won’t as it’s out of the norm for me and it doesn’t suit my project idea. Although I don’t know how to make music I will use some sound effects to create an atmosphere in a scene.

I’m not sure it would be the best format to use for my idea so at this time I will give it a miss. My target audience would prefer a different format due to their demographic.

An example of a music video:

Video game:

Video games are games that can be played on various platforms, such as consoles and personal computers.

Having Mechanoids as a video game would be great, as the idea is based around PC gaming. But I don’t know how to code, so this most likely won’t happen. However, I am making a roleplay game on Roblox with 5 other people called MWD Ultimate Roleplay, but making a game like that doesn’t require much skill as a simple roleplay game can be made just by building environments, creating models and a small amount of scripting. Even though I have the skills in a game engine; which is Roblox Studio. I still wouldn’t do it as games take time to make so I would have to begin production early. Later, if I have time, I could explore this more.

An example of a video game:

My game on Roblox! I made and designed this on Roblox, I am proud of how this has turned out.

Overall, I will most likely make Mechanoids an animation as it suits my skills in the software I know.

Also, due to my target audience being children, I feel that they would get the most enjoyment out of watching an animation rather than a documentary which would be better suited to an older demographic. My idea will work best as an animation because the characters are designed for young children in mind, the style of my artwork, the bright eye-catching colours and the fact that they can be created using Lego blocks. Choosing an animation format will showcase what I am best at, I like to animate and design games (as above) so this choice is ideal for me. I can improve my skills by practicing animation and in making this animation of Mechanoids I am doing just that. Perhaps I could add some 3d into my animation however I am more comfortable with 2d at the moment so maybe it’s best to do this when I have fully learnt how to action this method. However, this would improve my skills in 3d but I don’t feel its right to practice for a brief that I will be graded on.
