Concept art for Mechanoids RESUB

A blog post for the concept art for my creative media project: Mechanoids, which includes character designs, locations, and more.

Logo:

The logo’s colours show that it takes place in a gaming pc as the letters are grey and have different coloured outlines

Poster:

Here is the poster for my project brief:

I started with a rough concept of what it would look like:

Save them before it’s Game Over. Coming soon 2022

I went with a scene where the main trio is surrounded by Mechanoid clones while the villains watch them from above. This makes sense as Mechanoids is about the main characters having to play games of survival the villains have influenced to get their friends back while avoiding the clones of them. In the poster, Freezy and Sweepuff are concerned about what to do as they’re surrounded by clones, while Shockwing is ready to fight them off and defend his friends. Lord Froggy and his assistants are watching them from above menacingly as they think the trio is about to lose.

If I could try improving this using poster techniques, I could try removing the villains on the top and just have the main trio surrounded by clones. It won’t make much of a difference, as it would still explain the plot of Mechanoids. But having the villains there makes it more interesting as they are the ones making the heroes play the games. It also gives the impression of the villians being all powerful as they are looking down on their victims.

Final poster:

Characters:

Since I am using my original existing characters for this project and most of them are the Mechanoid characters, I already have my main characters for my project. However, since this project is original and to show they are not Mixel related, the characters have been created to be unique but remain true to the Mixel art style. Mechanoids have four-fingered hands instead of the pincer-shaped arms mixels usually have, their legs are a darker grey and different shape, and most importantly, they cannot change morph/change shape and adapt unlike the Mixel concept, they remain in their original shape/style. Unlike Mixels, Mechanoids work inside a PC.

Main characters

Heroes

These characters are the ones that will save everyone and stop Lord Froggy. Here are some concepts drawn in Animate:

Shockwing

“If we’re going to save our friends, we need to go into these portals!”

Freezy

“Something terrible has happened at the party room!”

Sweepuff

“Sorry Shockwing, I just thought you were scary.”

Using the artwork I have made, I put the characters in a unique art style so it’s different from the mixels one but remains true to the Mixels art style

Here is Shockwing in the new style. I used the same colours from the previous design and changed the shading to gradients. I changed the electricity parts to a blue colour to give a more dynamic look and to give the character more colour contrast and make him appear more dynamic.

Despite his menacing looks, Shockwing is friendly

Here is Freezy in the new style, same as before, but he now has more defined hands in keeping with the character concept in this project while keeping it true to the original design.

Freezy can run the fastest out of the main trio

Here is Sweepuff in the new style, the same as before.

No Mechanoid knows what Sweepuff’s head looks like

Villains:

The villains will be other characters I made who are not the Mechanoids. Froggy is the main villain, and the others are his assistants. Froggy’s backstory is that after Me (in this story) stopped using him and began using a bunch of new characters, he wanted revenge. So he disposed of those new characters by turning them into statues and throwing them into different locations in hopes of me appreciating him (Froggy) again. Once he heard about Shockwing’s welcome party, he knew he could implement his dastardly plan, as the Mechanoids would all be in one place. But, things go wrong when he realizes he fails to capture all of them so, he makes clones of the abducted characters and uses them to stop the main trio by making them play games of survival, against the cloned characters. Winning each game gives an opportunity to free one of the characters from their stone statue state.

Here are some concepts drawn in animate, Froggy’s assistants have evil eyebrows accessories, “So they look more evil”. The reason for this is that Lord Froggy did an experiment on his assistants to make them serve him properly, but it didn’t work as intended as it didn’t make them smart. This included sticking ridiculous evil eyebrows on themselves to assert their evil power and sticking “evil” labels on their stuff. It may not have worked, but they still serve Lord Froggy well.

Lord Froggy

“Hmm, maybe I could make them play a little game. If they survive these games and win, they get their friends back. If they lose, they are mine forever!”

Leggy (Villain)

“Look at me! These evil eyebrows make me double evil!!!”

Spongy (Villain)

“Whatever you say, Lord Froggy!”

Kevin T. Pebble (Villain)

“He never used to have arms and legs…”

Here are the villains put into the art style:

Lord Froggy:

Froggy does not wear the evil eyebrow accessory that his assistants wear because he thinks it looks stupid

Leggy:

Unlike the others, Leggy isn’t particularly very smart

Spongy:

Spongy does have hands, they are just invisible

Kevin T. Pebble:

Kevin thinks that making his middle name T. is cool

If we remove the evil eyebrows from the villains, they don’t look evil anymore, as shown here with Kevin T. Pebble. This is to show that despite the friendly appearances, the characters are evil.

Cloned party members

The Mechanoids that attended Shockwing’s welcome party were abducted into portals and made into small statues by Lord Froggy. But they were also cloned and put under his control, which is shown by their eyes being bright yellow and are constantly smiling to give an unnerving feeling. The statues show what the character had last felt before they became a statue and it shows on their face. If a clone dies, it will simply disappear, but if the statue of the character is broken, all existing clones will disappear and that character is returned to normal. They function as the enemies or other players in the survival games that the main trio play.

Cloned party members in the new art style:

Clifft:

“I don’t care you’re my friends, I’ll stomp you down!”

Slicker:

“It wasssss Ssssweepuff that did it!”

Flyby:

“I’ve been looking all over, couldn’t see them at all.”

“Leave it to me, I’ll get him!”

Gnasho:

“Here I come, ice boy!

Windee

“I’m going for Shockwing!”

Kazooh:

“Come here! Don’t keep the Lord waiting!”

Flarius:

“I will burn all of you!”

Locations:

As the entire setting of the series is inside a gaming PC, here is an image of what my PC looks like on the inside:

Although it is set inside a gaming PC, the locations will not look like this. It will be a fantasy world that takes place inside the PC. The worlds that the characters go to are inspired by some of the PC games I have played. But instead of the usual enemies in the games, they are replaced with the clones of the abducted party members.

Party room (where Shockwing’s welcome party is hosted)

Wiring room (where Sweepuff finds Shockwing for the first time)

Party room (portal incident) (when Lord Froggy abducts everyone in the party room)

Worlds:

A corn maze based on the game “Zardy’s Maze”. The main trio has to navigate the maze while avoiding the dangers that lurk in there: (party member clones).

2. A location based on the game “Spooky’s Jumpscare Mansion”. The main trio has to go through hundreds of rooms and get to the end, where they can free an abducted party member. They have to run from the party member clones that chase after them.

3. A location based on the game “Among Us”. The main trio has to play a game of murder mystery that has an ejecting feature with party member clones to free one of them. They have to find all the clues to win and avoid losing the game. Sweepuff ends up getting ejected here, which causes him to lose the game and disappear for the rest of the series. Lord Froggy rigged the game for the main trio and made them all bystanders, so it’s fair.

4. A facility based on the game “Ultimate Custom Night”. After Shockwing and Freezy go into the facility, they split up to look around the area. Freezy finds a security office and goes into the office chair, not realising he has begun the game. Shockwing calls Freezy, telling him he has to survive until he fixes what the problem is. Party member clones are going after Freezy during this time. A statue will be rewarded to Freezy if he survives.

5. A digital space based on the game “Gorescript” Shockwing and Freezy have to make their way to the end by finding all the keys and can use weapons to blast the clones.

6. A location based on “Dark Deception”, the main trio has to navigate the maze-like area and collect all the orbs to win. While also avoiding clones at the same time. They have to play Pac-man.

Scene concepts:

I have made some concepts for scenes that will help me when I’m in the production stage of the brief.

Here is when Sweepuff is looking for Shockwing and he finds the door to the electrical room is semi-open

Be careful it’s dark in there!

Here is when Sweepuff sees a blue glow in the darkness when he’s looking for Shockwing but gets scared when he sees him in the darkness

Oh no! Big scary thunder dragon!

Here is when Sweepuff meets Shockwing for the first time in the wiring room, Sweepuff realises Shockwing isn’t scary like he thought he was.:

Oh, nevermind he is friendly

Here is one scene concept where Freezy tells Shockwing and Sweepuff that something bad happened in the party room:

They would be in some kind of hallway here, but I couldn’t draw the background for this one sorry

Here is another scene concept of when they are in the party room seeing what has happened. Freezy explains what happened when he was there.

the first minute everyone was there and now everyone is just gone

A scene where Shockwing tells the other two mechanoids that if they are going to save everyone, they need to go into the portals

Name something more difficult than drawing shockwing with an open mouth

Physical concept art:

I have some physical pieces of concepts I will show here:

Lego models:

This is a Lego model I created of my first concept of Shockwing’s design.

I also made Shockwing’s final design in Lego form in a Lego building software, but it is impossible to make in real life as it uses pieces that don’t exist.

This is a Lego model I created of one character featured in the project, Clifft:

Shockwing plush:

I got a plush toy made of my character Shockwing, who is the main character of Mechanoids, I had this made to see if merchandise would be possible to make following the series’s release and the main characters becoming popular.

HE’S REAL!

Storyboards

Shockwing’s introduction:

I made a storyboard for the scene where Sweepuff finds Shockwing in the wiring room.

  1. Sweepuff finds the semi-open door to the electrical room and goes inside to find Shockwing
  2. Sweepuff quietly walks in and looks around
  3. Suddenly the lights go out, Sweepuff looks around, worried
  4. He looks behind him; he gets alerted by a pair of eyes and a blue glow in the darkness
  5. Frightened, he runs behind a generator and hides
  6. Sweepuff notices the blue glow getting closer
  7. The lights suddenly go back on. Sweepuff is alerted by Shockwing’s presence right in front of him
  8. Sweepuff gets scared, thinking he’s going to hurt him
  9. Shockwing kindly tells him he had only lost his way to the welcome party

Fun fact: When the lights go out, Lord Froggy had just launched his evil plan and the lights go back on when Freezy fixes it.

Here is an animatic I made up to the scene where Sweepuff gets surprised by Shockwing
