Bauhaus Logo

Introduction

In this lesson, we were introduced to logo design by creating a personal logo in illustrator in the Bauhaus style.

What is Bauhaus?

Bauhaus is a form of design that came from the Bauhaus Art School in Berlin between 1919 and 1933.

The bauhaus design movement was originally ended in 1933 as the Bauhaus art school was shut down by the Nazi government – it was contemporary art and therefore deemed to not fit with the traditional german values that the Nazis were so obsessed with.

The main premise of Bauhaus as a concept is that you can create art that is also functional in design.

Bauhaus design has five key characteristics:

  • Designs should be functional first, before the artistic value is thought about. They should only use what is essential.
  • Minimalism is important to Bauhaus designs.
  • Typography – fonts and their uses – is a significant part of Bauhaus design. Text is often created using shapes in an abstract way, using negative space. Fonts used are sans serif.
  • Geometry is fundamental to Bauhaus. Rectangles, triangles and circles are commonly used, as well as different boolean operations to make them more complex to look at.
  • The primary colours of red, blue and yellow are the key colours of Bauhaus.

Moodboard

Through researching Bauhaus on my own, I discovered the work of Herbert Bayer – an important figure in the bauhaus movement.

Some of his work is featured in this moodboard i created:

Here is a Bauhaus logo i designed based on the 1920s style.
