Introduction
This blog post is about the target audience for my Gundam animation.
A target audience is the group of people that a piece of media is aimed at. This group of people can be made up of specific ages, interests, employment statuses, genders, religions, ideologies and other things that make up a person’s identity.
Demographics and Psychographics
Demographics and Psychographics are used when developing the target audience for a piece of media. Demographics are statistical information about any person to do with their age, gender, race, religion, employment status, income etc. that can be collected and studied and used for marketing to people in similar groups. Psychographics are information about a person’s personality, opinions, lifestyle and interests that can be used to market to people with those similar internal thoughts and way of living.
My Target Audience Profile
This is the profile for the target audience for my animation.
Demographics
Age
Using the age of Vice media’s target audience (millennials), and the age of the target audience for my case study, Mobile Suit Gundam (teenage boys), I have determined that the age of my target audience should be young people age 16 – 30. The reason why the age range is so big is because a lot of the adults that are around 30 years old watched Gundam on TV as a child or teenager, and the younger end of the age range at 16 could be discovering Gundam for the first time, or be interested in it, as they are its intended age.
Gender
I think that generally my animation would be aimed at everyone, but I can see how it would appeal to teenage boys, as that was the original audience for Mobile Suit Gundam.
Employment status
I think that the majority of my target audience would be in education – further, or higher. This mean that they may be unemployed, but they could have a part time job.
Location
I think that my target audience would mostly be in north America and the UK, as this is where VICE is active, and those countries are where VICE aims itself toward.
Other demographics I don’t think are very relevant, anyone with any religion or of any race could watch and enjoy my animation.
Psychographics
Interests – A person watching my animation may be interested in anime, science fiction, or Gundam.
Activities – My target audience may already build Gunpla kits as a hobby. They might play video games, or read manga.
Opinions – My target audience may also share the same anti-war views as Mobile Suit Gundam’s message.
Social status – The animation I am creating would be posted for free on YouTube or VICE’s website, so anyone regardless of their social status would be able to watch it.
I think that almost everything else about my target audience would be the same as Vice media’s target audience because my animation would be theoretically hosted on their platforms, and the most likely people to see it would be those who are actively following vice and subscribed to their YouTube channel.
Conclusion
Thinking about demographics and psychographics helped me to create a target audience profile of my own, so that I could keep in mind the viewer while creating my animation.
