Introduction
This is the blog post detailing the main planning for my animation. It includes concept art, justifications for designs and storyboards.
Concept art
Here is a sketch that I drew of the rx-78-2 Gundam in order to give a basic feel for the pose of the character, as well as the colours in my final animation.
Here is the initial version of the sketch before I added colour:
Here are a few reference images that I used:
Design Justifications
The main aspect to justify here is the over all design and character. I used the RX-78-2 Gundam because it is the most iconic of the Gundam suits, being the first and original from the 1979 anime. I also used this design because of it’s reputation among fans of the Gunpla hobby – a lot of people have this Gundam as a Gunpla model, and it is best representative of the hobby.
The colours that I used were picked from the anime, and so will give my animation a look that is more reminiscent of the anime, than if I had picked any red, blue, yellow or white.
I chose the pose that I did because it is from a famous scene in the anime, and also I wanted to try out potential poses that I would use in my final animation, and I wanted to get the proportions of the figure right.
I think that I would have more to talk about if I had designed the character myself but, since I was doing my animation on a universe that already has characters in it, I thought it would be the best and most recognisable choice to use this character.
Storyboards
These are the storyboards I created for my animation. They are very simple, as my animation is rather simple, but were important to me when creating my animation as a basis or sketch for each change in movement.
Conclusion
Over all, sketching and creating storyboards helped me to get a grasp of how I would draw the character in my animation – its body proportions as a whole, the colours I would use and the way that I would make the character move.
