LUTs

Introduction

In this lesson, we practised some basic colour grading techniques in Premiere Pro, using Lumetri Color to change footage that we edited. Then, we used photoshop to create some LUTs for use in colour grading in premier.

LUTs

a LUT is used to change the values of colours in a piece of media.

They are packaged as presets using the .cube file extension and work with editing software like Premiere Pro.

There are a few different types of LUTs, two important examples are Technical LUTs and Creative LUTs

A technical LUT is used to make colours look the same on different displays – for example, when filming video, you want the colours to look the same on a phone as a computer.

A creative LUT is used to add a specific style to footage. For example, a certain film camera may have a specific look to it that you would like to emulate in your own video when you don’t actually own that camera to film with.

Here you can see how I used adjustment layers in Photoshop to create a LUT for a sequence I edited.

To export this for use in Premiere, I went to the ‘File’ menu, then ‘Export’ and then I selected ‘Colour lookup tables’. To use this in Premiere Pro, I went to the ‘Color’ tab and under ‘Look’ in the Creative menu, I selected the Browse option, which let me pick the .CUBE file to add my LUT into the footage.
