Photoshop – Double Exposure.

Introduction

In this lesson, we were introduced to creating a double exposure like effect in photoshop.

What is double exposure?

Double exposure in a traditional sense is where a photo is taken and the film inside of the camera is exposed to light twice, so that two images are imposed on top of each other onto the film. Of course, most photographs today are taken on a digital camera and so this effect cannot be created while the photos are being taken – instead, a double exposure with two digital images is created in photoshop or a similar photo editing program to give the effect that exposing the film twice creates. Below are some examples.

Tutorial

By creating and editing layer masks, altering saturation and opacity and editing selections, we learnt how to create this double exposure effect using two images with the tutorial given by my tutor.

You can see below the different images that i used to create the final effect.

Here are some images I edited on my own using the same effect.

I created them from Aphex Twin’s Richard D. James album art, as well as some images that I downloaded from pexels.

Above is the Aphex Twin album art, and below are the images I downloaded from pexels. You can see that I changed the colour of the image on the left to be blue because I thought that the blue would go better with the orange hue of the portrait, rather than two orange images edited together and not standing out from each other.

Conclusion

Over all, I think that this lesson was good practise for me with the quick select tool, as well as reminding myself of the way that layer masks work. The techniques I learned in this lesson to create the double exposure effect could also be useful in the future if i was asked to create something similar for a client, or if i wanted to create something that had the same effect to it in my personal creative work.
