Introduction to UV texturing in maya.

Introduction.

In this lesson, we were introduced to UV texturing in 3D, as well as the soft select tool in Maya. We learnt these things by creating a simple textured cube.

Soft select tool.

When you double click the icon for the select tool to the left of the screen in maya, it brings up the tool settings. From here you can go to the soft selection settings – clicking the tick box turns on the soft selcect function. This can also be done by pressing the B key on the keyboard as a shortcut. You will now notice that there is a gradient surrounding whatever face, vert or edge that has been selected. This is the area that will also be effected by the selection. Below is an example of the soft select tool in action. You can see how i have applied it to a polyplane to create a very simple hill shape.

In the tool settings, you can use the falloff radius slider to increase the area that will be affected in the selection. In the examples below, you can clearly see that when the slider is a lower value, a smaller area of the polyplane is selected and when the value increases, a larger area is selected. You can also do this with the same keyboard shortcut B, by holding down the B key and the left mouse button and moving the mouse from left to right.

The falloff radius at a value of 5

The falloff radius at a value of 10.

Adding UV textures to a cube.

Here is a render i was able to produce following the teacher’s demonstration on how to texture cubes.
