Extra cameras and 3D in after effects.

Introduction

In this lesson, we were introduced to working with a 3D space in after effects. we created layers that would hold text, converted them so that we could work in 3d, addded a light source, and experimented with material options on the text and light layers in order to cast shadows. For demonstration purposes, we used text, but this style of lighting can be applied to anything – such as images or illustrator files.

Lighting in 3D

First, we created layers on a new composition by going to the layer menu at the top of the screen and hovering over the ‘new’ option and selecting ‘solid’. this gave us a coloured backdrop that we could cast shadows onto. We then needed a subject whose shadow would be cast onto the backdrop. 3d cube icon thingy

Orbit around cursor tool

The orbit around cursor tool makes the camera orbit around the cursor. This allows you to view a 3D composition from several angles, and the addition of a second camera means that you are able to animate this feature – and produce a video that moves the camera to show different sides of a 3D object. The video below shows this in action.
