Introduction
In this online lesson, we were introduced to loglines and treatment so that we could generate ideas for our synopsis for our fantasy assignment.
last week, we looked at the burger method for writing a synopsis. This is where the paragraph is split into roughly 50 word chunks to break down the structure of the story – from introduction to conclusion.
film treatment
film treatment is a document that contains the title of the film, the logline of the film, the synopsis and a character overview. it is used to thoroughly explain the narrative of the production.
analysis of a film treatment
we looked at the treatment for stranger things – originally titled Montauk. it included a clear synopsis of the story, as well as the setting and characters in good detail. it brings a lot of different references in to different tv shows and movies that are from the 80s or set in the 80s to give a general idea of the specific theme and the show’s influences. it is well formatted with headers, and clear sections that detail each element of the story.
loglines
loglines are short summaries that are a few sentences long that are used to help pitch a production. it is a quick way to convey the narrative and hook readers in.
here are some loglines i have written to generate story ideas:
while searching for a way to stop himself from eating humans, a vampire living in the victorian era becomes tangled up in a mystery. a mystery that leads him to the dark cult at the centre of humanity’s power and corruption.
Rat is a girl who experiences reality in strange ways. she channels her experiences into music, but when creatures from her dreams leak their way into the real world, she is forced to look deep within her own consciousness to find a way to return the world to normal.
An eccentric thief teams up with a mismatched group of criminals to pull off the greatest art heist ever – the theft of a magic painting with a dark and tempting aura. what our group don’t know is that a scheming witch, a secretive agency, and a rival team of criminals are also coming after the same prize.
conclusion
Writing loglines for fantasy tv shows helped me to generate ideas for potential concepts for my assignment. I will be using my first logline (about a vampire) to base my final idea off, and will be writing a synopsis for this idea, and fleshing out the characters more.
