Lost at Sea.

Introduction.

In this professional development lesson we did an activity called ‘lost at sea’ that sets you in a scenario where you’re lost at sea and you have to rank items in their order of importance to see if you would survive. we did this induvidually as well as part of groups, and compared our results.

Why did we do the lost at sea activity?

to help us get to know each other, but also to identify the concept of group think.

Group think.

group think is a phenomenon that occurs within group settings where bad decisions are made by a group as a result of no one challenging anyone’s opinions/ideas – opinions/ideas that are going to be bad for the group and it’s decisions. people set aside their own personal opinions so that they can agree with the group’s consensus instead of challenging it.

Conclusion.

In this lesson, i learned about the concept of group think. I also worked well in a team which got on together, and got to know the people in my team at least a little bit. This was important, as i could work with them all in the future and be more familiar with working with them so that we can produce better work without having to get over the awkwardness of meeting and talking for the first time. Learning about group think will help my teamwork in the future, as when working with a group on a project i would be more willing to challenge an opinion i disagreed with in order for the project to be the best result that it can be.
