skills workshop – motion tracking and 2d masking

What is motion tracking?

motion tracking is the process of recording and replicating an object’s motion and applying it to a different object.

its a very versatile technique whcih is used different ways, from applying floating text to objects to camera movements for cgi sequences.

trackers.

trackers are tools that look for patterns and areas of contrast which are called ‘features’ and they are the desired points for tracking. the tracker searches for these features in each frame.

the centre – is the centre of the tracking marker.

feature area – a box that shows a wider area around the point that you want to track. the tracker searches for the feature in the feature area box.

the search area – the amount of spcae the feature area is allowed to search in per frame

how a tracker works.

  • you specify an area of contrast or pattern for the tracker to search for.
  • it looks for that feature on every frame and records its location in the frame on X&Y pixel coordinates.

Tracking task.

for this task, we used footage of a phone with tracking markers on it to add in an image that we tracked to the phone, and used the roto brush tool to edit parts of footage on top of the image.

we started by importing the video, and adding trackers. To do this, we went to the tracker menu on the right of the screen, track type, perspective corner pin and lined up the trackers with the phone. we then imported an image, and it fit to the dimensions of the phone.
