today we created a simple render in maya using the arnold aiStandardSurface shader on a 3D object and then applying the aiPhysicalSky1 shader to a physical sky.

box modelling is the process of using a primitive shape to create the shape of a final model in 3D software. creating more complex shapes out of a primitive is done to be more efficient and to be easier than starting from scratch

distributed rendering is a technique used to render projects where the project is split and rendered across multiple different computers on the same network. a lot of computing power is needed to render out a large 3D animation, and so it saves time and money rendering on multiple CPUs. a render farm is a form of distributed rendering where a lot of computers on the same big network are dedicated to render images. they are often used to render out 3D animated films.

3D Pipeline group task – rigging.

today we were asked to research rigging as a group. rigging is the process of  adding an armature to 3D models so that they can be animated. rigging is ususally used for humans and animals, as they have a clear skeleton, but it can be used for other things too.

  • knowledge of animation and the way things move.
  • knowledge of 3d animation programs.
  • problem solving, to find ways to improve the rigs and articulation to make the animation better.
  • collaboration, to work with other people and departments in the vfx pipeline (modelling and animating).
  • programming languages help to automate the rigging process.

 

What other areas of the pipeline does rigging rely on, or link to?

Rigging is preceded by modelling and asset creation, which is important for rigging because if there weren’t any 3D models to add bones and rigs to, the rigger wouldn’t have a job.

It is succeeded by animation. Animation relies on rigging to be able to move the characters, because each individual part is structured and can move because of the rig.

at the end of the lesson, i modeled a basic turret design for a castle using exrude.
