Introduction
Concept art is a piece of artwork that shows ideas for a creative production in an initial form that helps the creator to generate ideas and expand upon those ideas for their project. These initial ideas could be concepts for characters, locations or objects.
Concept art presents an idea in a way that fits with the mood and themes of the idea.
Here are some examples of concept art from Weta Workshop, the studio that did the VFX for The Lord of the Rings and Dune:

Composition
Concept art can use cinematography composition to try and imagine what a concept might look like in the final scene. Here are some examples of composition techniques that might be used:
- Rule of thirds
- Leading lines
- Golden ratio
- Fill the shot
- Change the angle
- Simplify the shot
Mise en scene can also be considered when designing concept art. These are things in a scene such as the lighting, sound and costumes. These things are considered to make sure that the concept that is being designed fits with the theme and visual style of the film – as these mise en scene elements will be present constantly throughout the film.
Storyboards
Storyboards are sequenced drawings which represent the planned shots of the film. These drawings show some dialogue and direction notes but are mainly centered around the main action in a shot. Movement can be shown with arrows, and images should be drawn in the shot type that will be used in the final film.
Advanced storyboarding
To improve on basic storyboards, an artist might want to add backgrounds, shading and colour to the scene. All of these elements will help other people to interpret what’s going on in the storyboards more clearly, rather than the storyboards only being legible to the artist.

The storyboards will also be the same aspect ratio as the final filmed shot. The aspect ratio is the ratio of the width of a shot to the height of a shot. For example, the aspect ratio 16:9 means that for every 16 units measured in width, the screen will be 9 units in height.
