Look Development – Wood

Introduction

In today’s session, the class followed the tutor’s tutorial to create and develop materials for a wood object in Maya. To recap, Look Development is the process of developing a 3D model using reference, textures and shaders to create a final model that is accurate to real life and well-considered.

Here is a metronome that I modeled, also including the reference image that I used.

Basically, I extruded a cube into this pyramid shape, and used the extrude tool again to make the shape on top of the main part of the metronome, as well as the hole in the front. I then extruded another cube to make the metallic strip that runs down the centre of the metronome, and duplicated and scaled it to make the ticker. Another cube was used to make the weight at the top of the ticker.

This is the UV map for where I want to add a wood texture on the main body of the metronome.

I then downloaded a HDRI from polyhaven.com and added it to a SkyDomeLight in the colour settings.

I downloaded textures for wood and metal online and added them to aiStandardSurface attributes on each of the models. In the settings of each standard surface, adding texture images to the colour and weight of the diffuse, normal, bump map and gloss settings.

This is the render.

Conclusion

over all, I got a lot of practise today texturing and shading objects. This is important knowledge to have when continuing to learn 3D modelling.
