Introduction

In this lesson, the class was introduced to our new brief as of the 1st March 2023 – The B1 Progression brief. We also started our work on this brief by learning about graphic design.

The Brief

The first task for this lesson was to look through the brief document for this assignment and see what was required from the students in each area of work.

The main deadline is the 16th of June. The “My Next Steps” presentation is the week beginning 8th May

Graphic Design and Branding

Graphic Design is the use of images, shapes and text to create designs for advertisements, magazines, books etc. Previously in the course we looked at CRAP – an acronym for the things that make up a good graphic design. For this brief we will be creating graphic designs of our own, and so those 4 principles of good graphic design can be expanded into 7:

• Emphasis
• Balance and Alignment
• Contrast
• Reception
• Proportion
• Movement
• White Space

Group Research: Research and Design

For this task we were put into groups and were assigned a design movement to research – my group was researching Art Deco. After we completed our main research, members from the group went to different group’s computers and were presented with the research that the group had found about a different design movement. When the group members came back we wrote down their notes from the other group’s research.

Conclusion

Over all, the research we conducted into design movements has helped to expand my knowledge into graphic design.
