Introduction
This blog post outlines the things I will need to include in my Theory and Industry blog post that will be marked formatively after the deadline on the 18th of November 2022.
Subject Research
Research the subject that you are interested in – My subject would be exploration in Science-Fiction.
Include further research on your chosen subject:
- Inspirations for your project
- What genres would your story fit into?
- Colour theory? How could you use colours to help represent emotion?
- Why have you chosen this subject area?
Client Research
Passion Pictures is the ‘client’ for this brief. For this research paper, I will need to research the company, including the subsidiary projects owned under the Passion Pictures name.
I will also be researching their target audience.
Other things to include:
- List of previous projects/films.
- Which genres do the films focus on? What are their themes?
- Where/how does Passion Pictures distribute their films?
Production Formats
For this section, I will research a few media production formats (2D animation, 3D animation, music video, gif etc.) before writing about my chosen production format, and why I chose it. How might this improve or showcase my skills?
Where would my project be posted? And how might this affect my creative decisions?

Case Study Research
Research your chosen subject (exploration in science fiction) within your chosen format with analysis using key media concepts – MIGRAINE:
- Media Language
- Ideology
- Genre
- Representation
- Audience
- Institution
- Narrative

Include examples from media which shows exploration in science fiction (Things like Star Trek, Arrival, Interstellar etc.)
Include information about story structure – the three acts, Todorov’s structure and the Dan Harmon story circle could be used as an example.
Conclusion
Overall, the topics and sections of this blog post will help me to think about the research I will need to include for My main research blog post.
Case Study – Your case study is good, the main bulk of your research is very descriptive and shows a clear understanding of your chosen study, “Star Trek: The Next Generation”. Your case study is well chosen, and I particularly like that you mentioned how Star Trek is all about exploration in space which is similar to your film. The Ideology of your is nice remember ideology is about how the filmmakers are representing reality, this could be through society and political as well as the technical elements as you have mentioned. I like that you wrote about how the workers can become addicted to the reality they see in the device. It would be good in the future to see if you could connect this to current society. Your other sections are well written and well researched and show a clear understanding of your case study so well done. Just as an extra note did you know that ILM (George Lucas’ VFX company) was asked to do the VFX for the Star Trek films, this could have been good to include in your institution section.
Subject Research – This section was good, also lots of detail and shows a clear understanding of your chosen subject. I like how you were able to apply both real-world and fiction-based research elements into this section so well done this is some very thorough work.
Production Format – Your production format section is also well researched I really like that you researched the three main production formats and reviewed how they all have their pros and cons and how you have chosen to create your project as a 2D animation as this fits your skills so well done and well done for concluding at the end. Overall, this section shows a thorough thought process and a clear understanding of production formats.
Client Research – You have a clear understanding of your client, Passion Pictures, you have clearly done some in depth research into their subsidiary companies, and the sorts of projects they have worked on. I particularly like that when talking about their target audience you were able to talk about how they make a huge range of media ranging from Lego animated films for children to more teen and adult based content like the animated opening to Netflix’s “Sex Education”
Overall, your theory and research are well written, and you have done very thorough research so well done. You communicated your findings well and this shows you have a clear understanding of how to conduct research and how to write a well-written research document.
